Pompeii and Vesuvius Tour From the Amalfi Coast

Five departures reach both sites from the Amalfi Coast, and they run from $167.22 to $321.76. Naples sells the same pairing at $61.41.

Before you assume the coast is being gouged, look at what changes between those prices. It is not time at either site. The coast departures give Pompeii the same two guided hours the cheap Naples coach gives it, and 80 to 100 minutes on the volcano against the Naples coach’s 90. Nobody on this page is buying more archaeology. They are buying road.

Why this coast is structurally expensive

The Amalfi Coast is the only origin in this niche with no railway. Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii and Ercolano all sit on the Circumvesuviana; Rome has a motorway and a high-speed line. Amalfi, Positano, Praiano, Ravello, Maiori, Minori, Atrani and Cetara have the SS163 — a two-lane cliff road that in summer moves at the speed of the slowest coach on it.

That forces three things into the price:

1. Smaller vehicles. The premium departures use vans, not coaches, because a coach cannot serve a Positano hairpin at 07:30.
2. Long, unproductive road time. The featured tour budgets about 70 minutes out and 90 minutes back, plus 50 minutes of transfers in the middle. Roughly three and a half hours of driving.
3. Door-to-door pickup, which is not a luxury here. With no station to walk to, a pickup point is the only way the day happens at all. The featured departure serves four towns; the $293.10 winery day serves seven.

None of that is padding. It is the coast.

What each rung actually adds

Read the reviews column before the price column. Two of these five have nine and sixteen reviews. That is not evidence of a bad tour — small operators on this coast run small numbers — but at $273 and $322 a head you are buying largely on trust, and you should know that is what you are doing. The $293.10 winery day has 155 reviews at 4.7/5, which is the deepest sample above $200 on this coast and the reason it is the one we would pay up for.

What the top rungs genuinely add is lunch at a working vineyard on the volcano’s slopes — the $293.10 day names Casa Setaro and allows 80 minutes there — and pickup from towns the cheaper departures do not serve. If you are staying in Ravello or Cetara, that is not an upgrade, it is the only option.

Compare the coast options

Two costs the featured tour does not put in the price

Be clear-eyed about the $167.22, because two real expenses sit outside it.

Lunch. Food is in the exclusions. In practice the coach stops at a restaurant with a set menu for tour groups, and guests report paying €18 to €20 for it. One wrote: “Although lunch was on our own, we were brought to a restaurant with a fixed price menu, €20 per person. Lunch was very good. My suggestion would be to just include lunch in the tour price and be done with it.” That is a fair criticism and a useful number.

Gratuities. The listing does not merely exclude them, it names a figure: “Gratuities (15 to 20% of the tour cost for guide is recommended).” Nobody is obliged to pay it, and tipping norms in Italy are far softer than that. But it is printed, so budget for the conversation.

Add both at the suggested rates and the real cost of the $167.22 day lands closer to $210. The $293.10 winery day, with lunch and tasting inside the price, is a narrower gap than the headline suggests.

The bit about the climb that coast guests keep mentioning

Two things come up in the Amalfi and Positano reviews that do not come up as often elsewhere.

The switchbacks. “If you get car sick easily, I recommend bringing some meds. It’s a lot of switchbacks from Positano to the top of Vesuvius.” You do the SS163 and the volcano road in the same day, and they are both corners. This is the one origin where motion sickness is worth planning for; one operator excludes guests prone to it outright.

The path itself. “Be warned though it’s a steep hike up.” “The hike up to the rim of Mt. Vesuvius was a bit strenuous (as expected) but we were blessed with some wind and light rain that was refreshing.” The park rates Sentiero n. 5 as low difficulty — 4,010 metres there and back, two and a half hours, topping out at 1,175 m — but the surface is loose ash and lapilli and there is no shade above 1,000 metres. The coast departures are also the strictest about who should not come: one excludes guests with heart problems, pre-existing conditions or recent surgery, and all of them exclude wheelchair users.

And the weather does what it does. One Amalfi guest was caught in “a rain and hail storm at the top of Mt Vesuvius” in June. Another, from Positano, wrote: “our day started with some disappointment, since due to the bad weather we couldn’t get up on Mount Vesuvius.” The crater path closes automatically on an orange-level Civil Protection alert, and the park refunds the €11.68 — but a three-and-a-half-hour round trip from Amalfi does not come back with it.

Getting there without a tour

It is possible and it is genuinely awkward.

There is no train. The realistic public chain from Amalfi is a SITA or Busitalia coach along the SS163, then a change, then the Circumvesuviana or the EAV bus 808 (€3.10, about 55 minutes) from Pompei up to the Vesuvius Quota 1000 terminus. Every leg is exposed to the same summer traffic the tour is, and none of them is timed to connect with a 10-minute Vesuvius crater slot that you must have booked online, in advance, up to 30 days ahead.

We have not printed a fare or a journey time for the SS163 coaches. The only line timetables we could reach for those routes are dated 2016 and 2021, and publishing stale bus times is worse than publishing none.

The seasonal ferry along the coast is the pleasant alternative for Sorrento and Positano, but it does not get you to Pompeii or the volcano. From this coast, a tour is not laziness — it is the practical answer, and that is exactly why it costs what it costs.

So which coast departure?

• Staying in Amalfi, Maiori, Minori or Atrani, and want the cheapest version that reaches both? The featured $167.22 day. Budget €20 for lunch, expect the cameo stop, and reconfirm your pickup the day before.
• Staying in Ravello, Cetara or Praiano? The $293.10 winery day is the one that collects from seven towns, and it has 155 reviews behind it rather than nine.
• Want lunch and wine handled? Pay for it explicitly rather than assembling it — once you add a €20 lunch and a suggested tip to the cheap day, the gap to the winery day is small.
• Prone to motion sickness? Take something before you leave. Two mountain roads in one day is a lot.
• Only in Campania for a couple of days? The honest advice is to do this from Naples or Sorrento instead. The Naples departures start at $61.41 and run eight to nine hours rather than eleven, and the Sorrento day does the volcano first, which is the better order for ten months of the year.
