What $29 more actually buys

The featured tour on this page is $90.18, rated 4.7/5 from 3,265 guests. The gap over the $61 coach is four concrete things:

For most people the pickup list is the item that decides it. Three of the twelve points matter disproportionately: Stazione Marittima if you are off a cruise ship, the Museo Archeologico if you are staying in the historic centre, and Starhotels Terminus if you are anywhere near the station. The $61 coach only offers the last of those, and Naples is not a city where an unnecessary 07:30 cross-town walk is a small ask.

Two clauses in the small print are worth more than they look. Book within two hours of departure and your only option is Hotel Terminus at 08:30 — the pickup network closes before the booking window does. And the driver waits five minutes, which the operator states outright.

The fork in the road, and the option name that matters

This is the genuinely unusual thing about the featured departure, and the reason it is on this page rather than the cheaper one.

Once lunch is done, you choose how to spend the two hours on the volcano:

• The Iconic Crater Trail — up the Gran Cono with a volcanological guide, the fumaroles, the 360-degree view over the Gulf of Naples.
• The Crater and Valley of Hell Trail — a trek with a speleologist through the Valle dell’Inferno, part of the older volcanic structure associated with the 79 AD eruption, and its lava caves, away from the busiest paths.

The listing then says something that is easy to skim past and expensive to miss: the Valley of Hell option DOES NOT include access to the current summit crater. If the reason you came to Campania is to look into the crater, that is not the option to pick, however much better the walk sounds.

The one on this page that never reaches the crater

Further down the Naples shelf sits a $132.62 tour rated 4.7/5 from 476 guests, sold as Pompeii Tour and Vesuvius Wine Tasting. It is a good day out. It is also, by its own exclusions list, not a Vesuvius tour: the line reads visit to Vesuvius Park under excludes.

What you get instead is Pompeii with an archaeologist and two hours at a working vineyard on the volcano’s lower slopes, with the wines that the volcanic soil produces. That is a genuinely lovely afternoon and several guests say so. But the crater is not part of it, and the title does not tell you that — one guest wrote that they were “a little disappointed that the wine tasting at Vesuvius was cancelled”, which suggests the confusion runs in both directions.

If you want the vineyard and the crater, the product to book is the $147.04 all-inclusive day: Pompeii with an archaeologist, a vineyard lunch with three Campanian wines, and the crater trail with an official volcanological guide meeting the group at the park entrance. It is dearer than everything else here and it does not pretend otherwise.

About that volcanological guide

Every Naples listing above $79 sells a guide on the volcano. The park’s rules make this more complicated than the listings suggest.

Above 1,000 metres a guide is compulsory under Campania regional law, and it is the Presidio Permanente Vulcano Vesuvio — the park’s own service — that provides one, forming groups of twenty at the gate. That escort is already inside the €11.68 ticket everybody pays.

So when a tour advertises a volcanological guide, it is either bringing an extra guide of its own or describing the one you would get regardless. Guests can tell the difference. One deducted a star from this very tour because “the tour description said that the walk up to the Vesuvius crater would be with a licensed volcanological guide, but in fact it was unguided.” A guest on the $147 day wrote: “We didn’t get a vulcanologist as the description of the tour implies.”

Read the volcano guide as a nice-to-have rather than a differentiator, and buy on the pickup list, the lunch and the group size instead.

Doing it yourself from Naples, honestly

It is possible, it is cheap, and it is the fiddliest DIY day in Campania.

The Circumvesuviana Line 1 runs Naples to Sorrento and stops at both Ercolano Scavi (about 15 minutes out, the transfer point for the volcano) and Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri (roughly 31 to 37 minutes, about two trains an hour, first at 05:39). Board at Porta Nolana, not Piazza Garibaldi — Porta Nolana is the line’s true terminus, which is where the empty trains and the seats are.

EAV’s Campania Express is the comfortable version: a limited-stop tourist service with a guaranteed reserved seat, eight runs a day from 28 March 2026, and — usefully for this itinerary — stops at both Ercolano Scavi-Vesuvio and Pompei Scavi. The fare is a flat €15 one way, €25 return to any destination on the line.

From Ercolano Scavi the private Vesuvio Express minibuses run up to the park in about 30 minutes, every 30 to 40 minutes from 09:00 (summer 09:00–17:00, winter 09:30–14:00). Their ticket covers transport only — the crater ticket is separate and must be bought in advance online. We could not verify the Vesuvio Express fare from the operator’s own price list, so we are not printing one.

The killer is the sequencing. Vesuvius sells 60 crater tickets per ten-minute slot, online only, released 30 days ahead, with a quarter of every slot reserved to accredited operators since 20 July 2026. Pompeii sells named, non-transferable tickets with 15,000 of its 20,000 daily admissions in the pre-13:00 window. You have to lock the crater slot first and reverse-engineer everything else around it — and if the weather closes the path, the park refunds your €11.68 but nobody refunds your day. That is what a $61 coach is really selling.

So which Naples departure?

• Want both sites done properly for the least money? The $61.41 coach. Deepest reviews in the niche, both tickets included, and you meet at the station.
• Off a cruise ship? The featured $90.18 small group, choosing the Stazione Marittima pickup. One guest on the cheaper coach made it back “just before 5:00” for re-boarding — it works, but the pickup point makes it work better.
• Actually here for the volcano? Take the featured tour and pick the Iconic Crater Trail, not the Valley of Hell.
• Here for the food and the wine? The $147.04 all-inclusive: vineyard lunch, three wines, and the crater. Not the $132.62 wine tasting, which excludes the park.
• Travelling in July or August? Any of them, but check whether the operator has reversed the order — this one reserves the right to, and in a Campanian summer that is the right call.
